CyberPatriot High School Cyber Defense Training Materials
The following resources are available for CyberPatriot coaches and participants. Please note that some of these resources reference external sites not affiliated with CyberPatriot. Additional materials will be added through the coming weeks, so please check back often for new materials.
External Resources:
Training Videos - The CyberNEXS Team from SAIC have produced a 17-minute video on UNIX Security Tips and a 23-minute video on Windows Security Tips. These videos are hosted by SAIC - just follow the link and scroll down the page to view them.
Learning about VMWare:
The CyberPatriot events, and the training materials on this page, use VMWare - a virtualization technology that allows you to run other operating systems on your PC in a virtual environment.
Introduction to VMWare - This introduces teams and coaches to VMWare's VMWare Player software - the virtualization platform used in both training materials and competition events.
Fedora Core Virtual Image - MD5 checksum = A204524A33A5B7D2DD33D58417F0069F This is a Fedora Core 12 virtual machine. This Linux-based virtual system should be downloaded and used for the "Using MD5 to Verify Downloads" and "Introduction to VMWare" activities. This virtual machine is also used in labs associated with some modules. You will need to download and install a copy of the VMWare Player software before you can use this image.
Verifying Downloads:
Using MD5 to Verify Downloads - As part of the CyberPatriot training and competition events your team will need to download large files (compressed virtual images). These instructions help you verify that the file you downloaded is complete and has not been corrupted during the download process.
Modules:
The following modules are zip files containing lessons on cyber security. Each zip file contains a PowerPoint presentation, an accompying instructor manual for that presentation, and (in some cases) lab activities to reinforce material from the presentation. Coaches are advised to download each module and use them in sequence as part of their CyberPatriot training and preparations.
Module One - Module One serves as an introduction to Information Assurance and Cyber Security. This module discusses fundamental concepts of Information Assurance and threats to cyber security.
Module Two - Module Two discusses the interdependency of physical and cyber security, the impact policies and procedures can have on cyber security, and the use of awareness training to strengthen cyber security programs.
Module Three - Module Three discusses the co-existance of data and voice traffic on networks, shared infrastructures, components of a typical network, and countermeasures for network-based threats.
Module Four - Module Four contains an overview of major Operating System functions, threats to Operating Systems, major steps to securing Operating Systems, and identifying vulnerabilities on an active system.
Module Five - Module Five discusses threats associated with applications and personal information along with basic techniques for securing personal information on computer systems.
